on day 9 of champix and had minor effects first few days – mild nausea and weird dreams. Yesterday, day 8, developed severe pain in top of right arm (shoulder) and today day 9 its almost unusable – agony on any movement. have also had some mild cramps in calf muscles and restless legs (juggling when sitting)
Leg cramps at night on day 2. Noticeable increase in dreams. Morning of Day 8, slight back pain (similar to period pain) when sitting. By midday of day 8 pain was severe, unable to sit. Pain continuous and getting worse- chronic on any movement. Only respite is to lay on side, completely still. 4 hourly treatments of 500mgs Paracetamol of no effect, following 4 treatments dosage increased to 1000mg 4 hourly. No noticable reduction in pain.
Ceased taking Champix on morning of day 9 when pain had not lessened. Continuous dreams and difficulty sleeping due to pain. Continuous 1000mg paracetamol treatment to no avail. Urine and bowl movements appear normal. Attending doctor on day 10.
I’m only on day 3, but on night number 2 I had some very vivid dreams. Only one of them could be classed as a ‘nightmare’, but wasn’t too scary. None of them woke me up.
I’d also like to add that I believe the poll results shown on this page should be taken in context. It’s far more likely that people with severe side-effects will search for and find this page. People with no side-effects probably won’t bother looking for pages like this, let alone taking part in a survey. So the results are bound to be skewed against the drug.
My advice as a UK taker of the drug, is don’t take it without some sort of support network to advise you if/when you do get side-effects. I started taking it as part of a group with the current following results:
Me: 1st week. Only vivid dreams as a side-effect so far.
Person 1: 3rd week. had to reduce doseage by doctor due to severe vivid dreams causing lack of sleep, but otherwise fine (still smoking).
Person 2: 3rd week. Mild nausia.
Person 3: 3rd week. No side effects at all.
Person 4: 2nd week. No side effects at all.
Person 5: 2nd week. Severe nausia during first week. 2nd week seems to improve due to ensuring they ate properly before taking pills.
Person 6: 2nd week. (I don’t know of their side-effects)
I agree with Jonathan’s comment that “It’s far more likely that people with severe side-effects will search for and find this page. People with no side-effects probably won’t bother looking for pages like this, let alone taking part in a survey. So the results are bound to be skewed against the drug.” In Survey Methods this is called a “self-selected sample” as opposed to a valid random or stratified random sample.
Though the manufacturer’s monograph does not find any particular contradindications for elderly people (aside from those with decreased renal [kidney] function), other clinical monographs do indicate that all classes of common adverse drug effects of Champix are more likely in the elderly. Therefore, this survey would be more effective if respondents were asked to indicate their age.
I for example am 65; from the beginning of taking Champix I experienced moderate dizziness; upon doubling the dosage as per the titration protocol, I immediately began experiencing nocturnal Restless Legs Syndrome of sufficient severity (unable to sleep for hours) that I had to discontinue the drug. I suppose I could have cut back the dose, but the dizziness had been progressing even under the lowest (0.5) dose.
for the past 2 days i am scared of myself. Today is day 15 and i am not taking it ever again. I have had severe depression, when i lay down i cant sleep and my legs ache. My moods are the worst one minute im fine and the next wow i turn into a angry monster. For the record i am a very happy go lucky person usually and i told my husband i feel so sad and i feel like im going crazy. For the past 2 days all i have done is flip out over nothing and cry like a baby. I cried that much i just wanted to sleep and never awake. I have suicidale thoughts and after reading up on this drug tonight im a bit relieved to know im not going crazy. I have stopped smoking and im hoping i will keep it going. I would not recommend this drug to anyone.
sorry my age is 28.
I’m a 28 year old woman, on day 14, and have never felt so depressed in my life. Crying for no reason, being nasty to my husband for saying hardly anything. And not taking any pleasure in anything. I have never been a depressive person or had any history of depression. Im just not my happy jokey old self. Only after putting 2+2 together I googled Champix and depression and bam…I am not going mad after all. I only have 1 smoke a day, if any, but would suggest to anyone that has a history of depression to research this and be aware of possible side effects.
I have had the usual systems nausia, tired etc for the first few weeks, I am now on day 16 of not smoking and day 30 of Champix and felt absolutely terrible all weekend, pains all over, dirrahea nightmares and constantly thinking about NOT smoking.
On day 5 started having horrible back spasms that brought me to the hospital. Not mentioned as a possible side effect with literature in my kit, thought I’d somehow injured my back. Back spasms continued for 10 days. Left shoulder in pain, can barely move neck, foot hurts and I just generally ache all over. Stopped taking at 3 weeks and no change in most of my body. Have had a couple physio sessions for my back and it’s getting better. Drug had me very constipated but at least that ended when I stopped taking it. 4-5 weeks ago I was a relatively healthy guy, now I can barely move. Normally I’d be golfing on a day like this; however thanks to Champix I can’t imagine being able to play again for months, if at all. On the bright side, I haven’t been smoking. No suicidal thoughts at all, wife says my mood has been good actually (though I have been a little cranky when the pain gets to me). Be very cautious taking this stuff.
I took champix for 7 days on the 7th day the abdominal pain had got so bad I could hardly stand up straight. I had prior digestive and joint problems that had largely subsided and was feeling a lot better. I had no idea that champix would cause constipation, fatigue and joint pain. I stopped taking them on day 7 that was over a week ago and my digestion is still not normal. My energy levels are still not back to normal and neither is the pain or stiffness in joints. I did have very vivid dreams from the outset but was happy to endure those.
Anyone with a history of joint stiffness or digestive sensitivities I suggest you avoid.
Aged early 40s and usually energetic and positive
day 16- i am 28yrs old. incredible pains/aches from the shoulder all the way to my fingers. Dr told me joint pain wasn’t a side effect of champix so he is sending me for a neck x-ray.i have stopped taking it since using google and learning joint pain is very much a side effect.other than the arm pain no other side effect and no craving cigarettes.sad i can’t keep taking it.
Day8 and onwards up to day 16,cutting tablet in half now, take half in the am and in the pm…. feeling sick and hot-sweaty in the am,I burp a lot at night so have to watch what I eat the last thing at night, take gaviscon for night relief.I completely understand about taking paracetamol, back and shoulder pain can be quite unbearable. At night, I take 2 phernergan tablets to help with sleep,I drink a lot of water throught out the day,but that doesn’t seem to help with back pain. Also been having neck spasms – more in the front, restless in bed of a night time due to pain, tossing and turning, but eventually sleep does come.I find that a pillow under the knees helps if you are laying on your back.
Quit day was 22nd April/09. Only very mild side-effets – sporadic itchy skin, dehydrate quickly, and joint stiffness (no pain). Champix is great -still crave a smoke everyday, but the cravings are very fleeting and not obsessive which was always the reason I didn’t quit before.
Week 10, and starting to have really bad chest pains, neck pains, and very bad mood swings. If not crying, then in a really bad mood with everyone. So have stopped taking them. Just praying that I don’t start smoking!!
On June 1, 2009, my fella had his second heart attack. We were both smokers. He had 4 stents, before this episode. When I got home from the hospital, I decided I HAD to not be smoking when he got home. I talked to my brother in law, who was very supportive.
He told me how his wife had taken champix and it helped her to stop smoking. I called her the next day and she told me it had helped her immensely, though she had a lot of nausea when taking it.
I asked my GP if she would give me a scrip for it and she agreed, but just for the first month. She said she wanted to see me before prescribing the rest. I bless her every day for that!
I was fine on the first 3 days – 0.5mg. When I was supposed to start 0.5 mg twice a day, I ran into trouble. I started with extreme lightheadedness, a bit of weakness and a LOT of flushing and redness in my face and upper chest. I should probably say I am 60 and had been smoking for 45 years.
My fella got home from the hospital and a week later, he had to see our GP. We both went and I told her about my symptoms. She told me to only take one a day.
The next morning, within a half hour after taking my last .5 mg tablet, I was flushing badly, very light headed and was VERY grouchy. I decided not to take anymore champix.
Four weeks later, I am STILL experiencing the same symptoms and am VERY unhappy, generally. I do not feel like I am myself any longer.
I gave the remainder of the pills to my pharmacist, asking him to dispose of them.
I will do my best to talk anyone out of EVER taking this champix.
Likw most of you all…I am praying I do not start smoking again.
from day one to three ok 0.5 dose once per day day four 1mg twice a day ok day 8 1mg twice a day the fun has started noticeable symptons include dizzyness mid afternoon madness around four oclock aggrivated to some bizzare extremes bad sleeping chestyness /difficult breathing around mid morning everyday some mild headaches increased tiredness
saying all the abouve i havnt thought once about smoking and havnt had any urge to have one work with people that smoke and it hasnt bothered me one bit forgot to menton eating rennies and gaviscon all day very bad acid indejestion ps excuse the spelling
I started using CHAMPIX 39 days at the day 15 i stop smoking .. but at the day 35 i start smoking ( 6,7 ) per day … What shall i do ? continue or stop taking CHAMOIX…. I need to stop smoking
I started using CHAMPIX 40 days.At the day 18 i stop smoking .. but at the day 35 i start smoking ( 6 to 7 ) per day … What shall i do ? continue or stop taking CHAMPIX…. I need to stop smoking.
I feel i’m not myselfe lately?!
On day 26. Have not had a smoke in 20 days, HOWEVER just spent the night in hospital with the most severe back pain I have ever felt. Dr thought it was a kidney infection but all tests said no. After reading all the side effects from this drug I now know what the pain is from and it ain’tmy kidney, it’s this crazy drug!
Im on my second day of champix, taking 2 a day, started 5 days ago on one aday.since then ive spent 2 days in hospital with severe chest pains! had blood tests and ecg’s which all seem to be fine, nothing wrong with the ticker..I can only put it down to champix after reading similar reports ive stopped taking them now and lets see what happens..Ive also had stomach ache, headache and all the other symptoms that seem to go with this drug, especially sweating and light headiness.
After 2 weeks I experienced a strong metallic taste on my tongue, puffy sore eyes, constipation, nausea, digestive pain and urges to smoke again. emotionally I felt calm. My pharmacist suggested I cut the 1.0 dose pill in half for twice a day. Still constipation, digestive pain, nausea and loss of appetite. At 1/4 dose urges to smoke increase and side effects remain. I was advised to drink ginger ale but because I do not drink pop, ginger tea was recommended. Because I am sick now i have lost 1 days work today and sense this drug is poison for me. Zyban landed me in Emergency in the hospital with a severe allergic reaction. i was lucky to get there in time. Can the government please insist on more sensitive testing before releasing these expensive risky drugs on the market without downplaying the side effects? How many people actually report them so how can the companies know the percentage of risks to humans. (My pharmacist said going to the doctor will not help because he will not know how to decrease the side effects).
been on champix for the past 2 and half weeks, best thing i ever did, dont want to smoke, dont feel sick, dont want to kill myself, just feel free from that damn drug nicotine after 40 years on it. so yea if i experience a few wierd dreams over the next few months thats fine, at least i should be alive a bit longer
ps best advice i had was from smoking support person at chemist, DONT READ ABOUT THE SIDE EFFECTS unless you feel unwell, cos human nature is that we read it will cause this then yep we got it. Get real folks smoke and die or take champix and succeed .
I’m on my 13th day with Champix. YES I feel like hell for 30 minutes after taking each pill. Yes I had weird funny dreams but not nightmares.
I stopped smoking after day 6. Absolutely relaxed I just “think” I want to smoke when my wife starts nagging. The weight is also under control.
I feel great. Thanks Pfizer!!!
PS: Champix is the only drug I’m taking at the moment.
I’m on my last 3 weeks of champix for good. I have been smoke free for 2 months and I have experienced constipation and weird dreams but apart from that I’m happy with champix.. Its really sad to hear all the stories above that champix can do this..I’m hoping when I stop champix in 3 weeks all is good… good luck everyone..
I think the people who have been taking Champix and claim that they are experiencing depression after a few days of taking the drug are mistaken.
Sure they may be experiencing depression but this is a side effect of nicotine withdrawal, not Champix. Your body still goes through nicotine withdrawal despite taking Champix.
I started taking Champix 3 days ago.
I’m 33 years old.
I havent really wanted or needed to smoke since not long after the first tablet although I guess I have smoked 3 or 4 a day , but compared to the 30-40 I was smoking I think this drug has some ‘interesting properties’.
I have been experiencing side affects.
I am constantly hungry, moody, aggresive, and this is out of character for me I think. my wife says it will be worth it in the end.
Last night (day 3 ) I fell to the floor in my living room with such severe chest pain I couldnt even speak, it took my breath away and scared me half to death. I called in sick at work and slept instead ( I work nights).
It is now the morning of day 4 and I have just taken the tablet, I still have pretty severe chest pain and I intend to see the doctor later this morning if possible.
I am furious this potentially dangerous drug was given to me so easily and none of these ‘side affects’ were explained properly to me , the so called stop smoking nurse should not just dish this stuff out and then make an appointment for you in 2 weeks time when all the hard work is done and I will be giving her a piece of my mind later this morning………………………………..to be continued……….
I am finishing day 4 on Champix. I was smokine 20-25 cigs/day, and I already am noticing I don’t think about it as much – down to 10 cigs/day. The only issue I am having is intense burning in my stomach right after I swallow the pill. This feeling last for ~ 5 minutes. I have tried eating before, during and right after, and nothing helps. However, if a little burning helps in me quitting smoking, I will put up with it! Good luck to everyone!
Champix is sensational. After 35 years of smoking and numerous attempts to give up, this is the easiest I’ve ever done it.
Nine weeks off the fags and this is the first time I’ve ever felt confident I’ve beaten the bastard things.
No side effects.
day 17 of not smoking. Champix does exactly what it says on the box but sadly to say it does a hell of alot more. First couple of days on it was good if not amazing, from 30+ cigs a day to not wanting one at all. I had a few side effects e.g increased dreams, headache, etc, but I didn’t mind that as long as I didn’t smoke. The last 2 days has been one massive nightmare, severe nose bleeds, constant headache, stoned off my head and not in a good way, have to park myself beside the toilet because i cant stop getting sick. Chest pains and my dreams have turned into a horror film, for example I think I killed 7 or 8 people including my own father and then took my own life, I have a great relationship with my father so I have no reason to want to kill him, lol. It left me extremely shook. It was amazing how vivid and graphic the dream was. Basically im sure its different for other people but it seems to me the cons outway the pro’s. In the past some drugs have been banned for less, if I stay on them I feel I will be in hospital by the end of the week. Old fashioned will power required instead. To sum it up, Champix works but at a cost.
hi all,ive been a heavy smoker for 30yrs(40 a day),havent had a ciggy since day 8(cut down to a few a day from the start),now on day 12.no side effects for me as yet,but my mrs who started the same time as myself is getting little sleep and is very tetchy.my sister in law has`nt smoked in 8wks now(she inspired me to try it).champix does work.i hope i keep it up.
I am 36 years old and been smoking for 24 years. I have been on champix for 42 days and totally smoke free for 31 days. I am fit and not over weight. I was admitted to hospital with chest pain, my chest felt like I had just been out all night smoking & drinking and was so tight I
I am 36 years old male, smoking for 24 years. I have been on champix for 42 days and totally smoke free for 31. I am fit and not over weight. I was admitted to hospital with chest pain, my chest felt like I had just been out all weekend smoking & drinking, but I had been at home with my family. Had all the tests and all is ok and they said it was probably champix, happens all the time they say, all sorts of side effects the doctor told me. Have also had depression, anxiety, stress attacks, nausea, vague & moody. Champix has helped me to stop smoking, and i could have never have done it without it, but the side effects are very serious. For the record I have never suffered from the above side effects before taking champix. I am not taking it again and I hope that I do not start smoking again. I wish you all the best of luck.
Hi.Started champix 23 days ago and stopped smoking on day 7.now on day 23 and havent smoked or had any side effects.
I think it works for some people and not for others.
So far i think Champix is great!!
