Was started on Cubicin for staph MRSA. Was bed bound due to the staph that was in my left hip joint but ended up bed bound for over 3 months due to the cubicin. CPK level went from one Monday of 50 to over 2700 on the following Monday. Caused severe muscle damage. Started having severe muscle spasms in the lower back and psoas muscles. Could have over 100 a day to start with. If you think a cramp in your calf is bad, you should try a severe spasm in your psoas muscle. It feels like someone has shoved a butcher knife into your hip joint and the muscle is being torn from the bone. I have recently had one so severe with such intense pain it caused me to pass out. Was placed on fairly high dose of Baclofen 3 x day which has helped a great deal but does not stop spasms completely. Right thigh muscle is still numb and will probably not get any better since it has been almost a year now. I am still having to use a walker and cannot bend over at the waist at all without it causing spasms. I spoke to the pharmacist that was supplying the cubicin through home health and was told that 8 out of 10 people have moderate to severe side effects from cubicin. I would like to know why this product continues to be used. I was switched to Zyvox. Found out later that it was much more expensive than Cubicin. I guess the insurance companies are dictating which antibiotic we use based on cost not side effects.
