   I had a total thyroidectomy in August of 2007. A very large tumor was removed and one of my parathyroid glands was autotransplanted. However, within a month or two of the surgery I started experiencing severe muscle cramps, spasyms and twitches. My calcium levels dropped and tests determined my parathyroid glands weren’t working. I was put on Calcitriol .25mg twice a day in addition to taking Calcium. Things improved but I still continued to have muscle twitches and some cramps and spasms. In about April of 2008 I started have muscle pain and bone pain. My doctor didn’t seem to be concerned about it and her assistant said I should see an Orthodpedic doctor. Well, the pain continued and on my next visit in June, my doctor told me that yes the Calcitriol could cause bone pain. Things continued to get worse so I began cutting back, and the pain decreased, but I would go back to the original dose only to have the pain return. Needless to say, I don’t know what I am going to do. I called my doctor and told them I wanted a blood test because I felt so bad. I called the doctor tocheck the results, the doctors assistant said everything looked good, tsh, calcium (finally in the low normal range) and B12. But she checked further and said my liver panel wasn’t normal and would check with the doctor. I have also had other minor sysmtoms, thirst, sleeplessness, etc. Not sure what I am going to do.
