I underwent surgery on my knee for a torn ligament. Immediately after surgery my entire leg was red and hot. Within 24 hours I developed thousands of flat red spots, with some areas itching like crazy. When I was allowed to shower, days later, I noticed the orangey brown color washing off of my leg. I have a known iodine allergy and this was made perfectly clear. The surgeon told me that he never saw this reaction before. Within a week I went to my dermatologist who did a biopsy to rule out vasculitis since I am known for autoimmune disorders. I was putting topical steroids on the rash and it lasted for over 4 weeks. The rash would look more inflamed with any type of heat near the leg or if I had tight fitting pants on. Having that hang over my head for 10 days was very scary because vasculitis can have very serious side effects. And the fear of Lupus and connective tissue disorders and the possibility of having to take chemo drugs did nothing to alleviate my fears of this unknown rash. After the biopsy I was told that it was all an allergic reaction and no news is good news. But that doesn’t allay my fears that this will happen again on my body after a surgery with newer consequences that are unknown to me at this time. I will never rest not knowing. I need to know what caused it and I wish the professionals would listen and be more careful with the products that they are using and double check the ingredients and cautions. Maybe then this would not have happened to me. I will never feel safe in a hospital again.
