My mother is experiencing a severe reaction to Boniva. The first month she had a 104 degree fever with flu like symptoms. At 84 years old, this could have killed her. The doctor claimed it was not the Boniva. So the next month, after taking this medicine, she came down with an incredibly itchy rash that is continuing to spread all over her body. Now, they are admitting that it probably is a reaction to the Boniva. Does anyone know if there is a way to neutralize this drug or speed up the removal of this drug from her system - she is tortured by this rash.
I took Boniva for 2 months and experienced severe joint pain, muscle cramping, joint stiffness, I went to the doctor for help and he took blood. I am waiting to see if I feel better. It spread around my body -stomach, head, feet, hands. I hear it takes a few months to feel better.
I just have had a tooth extraction and implant for a left molar. The dentist asked me if I was taking anything for osteoarthritis. I said Boniva. He stated that boniva and Fosomax was detrimental to wound healing and that it opened the osteoblast to excreat more calcium, which may be taken from the teeth if not enough calcium was available. I had a bone density test and they said it was way above normal. I walk 2 miles a day. Should I be worried or discontine the Rx?
Sincerely,
Pat Webb, RN
I’m a 64 year old female with osteoporosis and, after 3 monthly doses of Boniva, I began to realize that I was beginning to have a number of physical problems that I had not experienced before. I am having cardiac flutter, extreme daily back and joint aches and pains that make it a struggle to perform normal routine. Unfortunately, I took the prescribed dose December 1 before I spoke with other women who had experienced the same side effects. I won’t take it again, and just hope I will return to normal when I stop!
My 82-year old mother has a tendency to get depressed and difficult for 2-3 days at the end of each month. I remembered that she takes Boniva once a month at about the same time. Could Boniva or maybe the side effects be causing her to seem depressed? She doesn’t always admit to her conditions, but I do know that she has dry, light sensitive eyes, sneezing and coughing. She’s also had flu-like symptoms and has thrown up. I’m at my wits end trying to help her through this.
I only wish I had done my research on Boniva before diving into taking it!! It has destroyed my physical health and at the moment, I can’t walk without limping and get out of bed like a 90 year old woman!! I was an active, athletic, competitive figure skater up until 3 months ago!! Boniva has created enormous joint, hip and back pain. Even my fingers and hands hurt, I can’t even open a jar! I am so depressed and exhausted, probably because I don’t sleep from the pain. I am trying everything, all pain relievers, hot salt baths, cold therapy, stretching, etc. and even acupuncture to no avail! How can I get this out of my system?? Please help!
Patricia,
Stop taking it. I took Boniva for 6 months…slowly went into pain, felt like an 89 year old. Am athletic but had to hold the railing coming down the stairs. Back pain, hips, knees etc. Last took it one month ago and have not refilled. Back pain has finally ceased. Don’t feel like trying this med again to see if the pain comes back. Back to Actonel which I took once a week and didn’t have the same effects. Good luck.
